Mert Otsamo -Scarlet! follows Vol. 1

I have decided to update my blog with a row of designers and artists, that I am currently following. In no particular order, my first spot is owned for Mert Mikael Otsamo - a young designer who lately participated in the "Project Runway: Finland".
There are several articles online, where you can find all the basic info about him, for many newspapers and freelance-writers have been interested in him. With a quick look-through of those, you can find the amazing facts that he is only 18, a fan of cosplaying, a huge follower of Lady Gaga, and that he actually managed to get himself in the final three of the "Project Runway".
But he is more than that. I wanted to write about him from my own perspective, and introduce you to a new designer that is more than meets the eye.

2009 I heard about "Project Runway" coming to Finland. Well, for my bad (and good) luck I had moved to Italy, so in my situation I wasn't able to apply for the competition. I absolutely would have done it, if living in Finland, because my past in all kinds of competitions have shown how much I attract trouble.

I followed the program online, and saw how the brutal finnish media was trying it's best to destroy the personal life of the competitors. In our media it has now come a trend, to call the reality-tv-competitors with the show title attached: "Big brother-Tina got stuck in the elevator", "Survivor-Hanna was spotted in a local bar". And "Project Runway" was no exception. Because of the finnish name of the program "To the top of fashion", also their young competitor got a new title: "Fashion-Mert".

And soon Fashion-Mert and the others were spotted in the program doing this and that scandalous, when they had done nothing interesting in reality. A viewer paying more attention could have spot this, but unluckily some of the crowd just swallowed the information full. Our media had yet again grabbed a hold on things that were out from the competition itself. But inside all these scandalous cuts of film, I believe I saw a glimpse of thruth on what had happen behind the scenes. A truth about a boy who is very sweet, and hell-talented. A boy, who had never said any negative comments (that are out-of-line or out-of-competition) about another competitor, when the others talked envious facts about how their personal relations worked.
He started in the competition as an underdog. As the youngest, most un-experienced designer. And this took my attention. When I was a finalist on the Nrj Fashion awards 2005, this was my position too. I just wanted to steal Mert away from all the bad things I knew would be coming his way.

Being the underdog of your class at school, at your new working place, or in a competition, puts you into a position where the more experienced are already planning how to smoke you out. They only wait, when you fall. And if you actually hold your position, or even go upon their talents, they will start a war. All of a sudden, the world order has gone wrong in their eyes. It's envy that gets them angry, the envy, that someone unexperienced is actually BETTER than them without education. Well. Wake up and smell the coffee. People, at that point you just have to admit, you suck.

And Mert held his position. I felt so glad for him, and I could so live through his pain. I watched every episode of the program biting my fingernails. Then thinking through the next night, what I could have designed for the mission of the episode. I took the show very personally, because I had gone through similar despair on my previous experiences. And Mert was my favorite, because I could see my own past, youth years, in him. And god, this boy did it all even younger! I also related to his teatrical style, for I had been both criticed and thanked for it in my competitions.


Theatrical or not, fashion or not, he made the most beautiful outfits of the show. He used a big variety of interesting materials and solutions. Which confirmed to me my theory: since I was 15, I have been thinking that "sometimes experience don't equal talent. Being educated, might even kill some of your creativity". Because if you don't KNOW how to do something officially, you have to figure out your own solution to do it. And you just might end up creating a better way to do it than what the original way was! Trying, and possibly falling, is the route to new creations. And Mert certainly made his best effort on this, without knowing much about patterns or materials, combining them anyhow in the way that fit the body beautifully, and giving the viewer a "wow"-effect. At the same time, a bunch of professional tailors failed, by doing some un-fitting tents upon the bodies. And I even re-call one of them saying a "bad" thing about Mert climbing to the finals by using a lot of patterns fitting the body, alternating the basic pattern.
-Excuse me? Since when was the designers' job, to make the body look ugly by putting a tent on it? Since when, has it been positive and professional, to make a pattern that doesn't even resemble the body? Since when, has it been ok to be a master of fashion with a collection of fabrics just pulled up on the shoulder? No wonder these kind of designers can make 20 pieces of clothes in no time. Because they are not using any TIME to do them. But poor Mert actually started making an art piece of every cloth in the competition, from very hard materials and with very hard designs. No wonder it took him a bit more time, panicking at the last seconds. I think us, who also do the theatrical style, can feel the pain. Fashion can be theatrical too, fashion can be art too. Let's keep it that way.

And Mert's possibilities did not stop to the program. He was also found as a model, and now he is working through europe, gaining experience in the business on-stage and backstage. It seems it was enough for him to get to the finals -he didn't even need to win, and organizations, journalists and designers are contacting him. And some of these contacts he's even been saying "no", because he does recognise his own level of experience and chooses wisely what requests he can fulfill, and which not yet. This is a sign of a good designer. And yes, being an 18-year-old, with the world all of a sudden attacking you from every direction, must give you quite big shoes to fill. He is perfectly allowed to take a moment to grow, allowed to fear, allowed to make experiments, allowed to fail, too. After he has done all that, we will see him suddenly rise, and win a full, great career in the upcoming years.

And we will see. It just might be, that someone older and technically experienced designer, has faded away from the spotlight and ended up as a simple tailor in some unknown company -when our underdog has risen to fame and fortune. Education and experience will make a talent grow. But education and experience cannot create a talent. It is there, or not. In Mert's case, it is there, and it will rise to fame if it's nurtured in the upcoming years. I wish all the best for Mert, and when he will grow professionally, the ones who turned their back on him will regret they underestimated their underdog.

Vintage: The joy of being a woman

I'm glad to notice that a somewhat more feminine image of a woman is arriving behind our backs. There has started to be a large number of vintage shops in all of the greatest cities of the world and an increasing number of consumers are buying their clothes from 1920 - 1970. -Against the trend that still wishes the woman to be bold, harsh, breastless and almost masculine. Increasing number of women (and men) have made a change of style, when for example the innocent, life-loving, decade of the 50's has been the answer to their prayers. No man can say "no" to a curl-haired girl with blood-red lips. Believe me, they won't even notice the top model that just passed in jeans.

I presume no woman wants to "return to the kitchen", which unfortunately was the woman's way in the past. But when you check the old Pin up's, you might notice that the women in them are not just feminine -they are strong and they know exactly what they are doing. Marilyn did not step on that ventilator by an accident.

This strength is a part of a modern woman's image. With time, the image got more harsh, more masculine and more demanding, because we had a message to make. We had to free the women, we had to rip them off from the kitchen and leave the man to cook for himself. The woman did not want to use her strength silently behind the cute skirt and safe walls, but wanted to run to the barricades to show it also outside. The point was to show that this strength was there and that we were able to make our own decisions. I believe the new style became hand-in-hand with the new message, just to clear it out.
But now I can see a change. The woman's position is far more better than before and world is now more used to it. Maybe we have come across the moment, when the same respect can be reached by just being a woman. A true feminine woman, that can still work and be independent. The moment to be harsh and masculine in power, but not in image. The moment, when we don't need jeans or a curveless body to prove that we are equal to men.

Probably the fashion for masses will recognise this rise soon. I pray it will also recognise the new need for a new type of models. No pin up -girl was a thin, 175cm high model. They had been maybe thin in waist, but they had damn big curves. Hail Beyonce and Jennifer Lopez for bringing this out too!

Maybe this new wave of vintage will bring out an interesting mix of the past and the future. A pretty dress does not oblige us anymore to bow our heads and listen. Maybe the pretty dress is our new way of settling things down on their modern place. And only god knows, it might be our newest weapon -the woman back then, used her strength in the ways the listener would not notice. Like a cat with velvet paws. A modern woman uses her strength with cat's nails out. So what happens when the modern, independent and oh-so-used to her position female puts on a dress and combines both of these powers?

We are more equal than before. Let's not over-do it, and take down the world. We need both men and women, because the Black Widow must be madly lonesome after she realizes that she actually won. There is no winner when you try to make a tune of harmony. Maybe this new rise for vintage is simply because the young boys and girls are crying to find a bit of fun, innocence, and most of all a healthy life-style and -self image. In this new world where everything so serious, changed and asking for miracles (that an average person can not do), it is natural some put an a skirt and say "I won't be a model, and I look better than them this way. And I don't need to act like a man, to do his job. And I am what I am just as I am and that will make me a success."

For what I have noticed on the streets, girls in vintage style get the looks and the attention from men and women alike, gain a lot of respect and positive comments. -And no-one is especting these girls to stay home. Not anymore. It gains the respect from everyone around you not to fear anymore to look like a feminine woman, for it no more means we have to do as we are said. And for men, a woman with a harsh style that looks like she's ready to bite, is less attractive, than a woman that puts on a skirt and a sweet smile. It intriques them. Because they know this is a modern woman, and a modern woman might bite even behind the sweetest skirt. And they do want to find the truth out by themselves.

La mia Ditta / My Brand?

I'm on the edge of finding myself a new name to work as. Soon I will register my own little business, so I can finally work independently and do everything I have ever dreamed of. Maybe the path of independence is rocky, but I am willing to embrace the adventure.

Milano

Life starts to settle here. New routines are found and things start to become easier. It has been a surprise for me, how hard it is even to take a bus in the beginning? In the beginning your head simply don't know what to do with all the new thoughts and information you need to create and gather.

Finding a job in Italy ain't so easy either. After turning down few summer village offers, that would have used me instead of helping me, my spirit is lacking faith. This is the worst moment to try to find a job, even for an italian designer. The problem is that many seem to be interested in my experience, but none are willing to pay even a -normal- payment for it. Take everything and give nothing back.

But as a city, I start to like some of Milan. In the spring sun it is beautiful and the quality and size of fashion stores is amazing. Colours are quite a hit on the fashion right now, violet on number one spot -at least what comes to the image of Milan.

I learn every day more and more italian, but still I talk like Tarzan. It's funny that italian students have troubles finding a job because they do not know english, but I have a problem finding a job because I do not know italian. Well. In time.

IUAV Venice: Directing course "Prince of Homburg" 2007

More slides on my archives! Here is one from my studies in Venice. The course was directed by Elisabeth Schweeger http://www.berlin-school.com/en;faculty-research;faculty;d:431.htm and it was about the play "Prince of Homburg". Each student had to analyse it, direct it, make the scenography to it, and costume it. Only as a rehearsal luckily, the production wasn't really made on-stage in reality. Lucky for me, my idea would have taken millions.
Here you can see parts of the final idea that Ms. Schweeger finally accepted, and gave me good points for it. After calling me a "Kitch Noodle" for first fighting so hard to make the world pretty, and pink, and filled-with-fairy-tales. But I do thank for it, because I was able to reach new kind of ideas that I haven't tried before!

Ps. Unfortunately, this fine idea crashed at once, when 6 months after the course, I saw the movie "300"....Shame, I would've like to use this some day.

The Books of Elliot

"Elliot glanced up in pain. Now he heard the bells coming nearer, somewhere in the ghastly horizon barely shown by the fog. His wings were finally free, but still hurting. Everyone aboard still dead.. he checked. Nothing new since he had fallen asleep in fatique. Should have listened to Basil."

Since 2005 Nrj Fashion awards, I have been writing a fantasy book in finnish, by workname "The books of Elliot". In a nutshell, the book is about angels upon earth, with the true freedom of choice, when human has it only inside certain boundaries: but the question is which ones are truly free, pure, and safe, when the world is getting closer to it's final day and only the angels happen to know all this. "The end is easy for a human -he needs only to die." -Elliot

The work continues slowly (due to my work on other parts of career), but it is growing page by page. Some day, hopefully within 5, or at least 10 years, I plan to publish it. First in finnish, later in english. Forgive me if the upper quote from the book contains mild or bigger mistakes, I'll leave the final translating to professionals. It is a huge dream to catch, but I would not be the first one in Finland to be able to do that! Others have managed, I might too. Time will show.

After the success of Elliot on Nrj -and the Ropecon 2006, where the role-playing audience gave it's great acceptance to him, my hopes got up that he might have a bigger space open in the people's hearts, if I just keep pushing him forward. Some day. I don't want him to be forgotten, not by me, nor by others.

Right now a new costume is coming up into the collection. Partly for schoolwork, partly for my own need. It was time to remember the fabrics, the form, the spirit of the collection. Maybe through this new outfit some new will come up to the book too, we will see! I'll put pictures up later!

Cheek feat. Illi, The videoshoot summer 2008

I have been working as a second director, and as a stylist/scenographer for Cheek this summer. The video "Kanssa tai ilman" is now finally finished and will be published next week at http://www.cheekki.com/

It is directed by Daniel Art and will be shown at least on The Voice tv and Music Television.



The videoshoot was absolutely lovely. I so adored the two boys, and our whole crew. Everyone got along extremely well, and our long hours of work was resulted into many strange things. Few of the most memorable moments were the on-set battle between Illi and our dancer Maria Serena Järvinen about gum, and another on-set fight between our dancers with pillows (both fights were made for the silhuette shots of Illi). Not all was easy through these months, but I nevertheless enjoyed every moment of it. This was a good sequal to my work for Apollo on the side of rap-entertainment.



All I kept thinking for months and months, was violet, white, yellow, fashion, violet, fashion, rap, violet...and wooden dolls. The wooden dolls we decided to have as the main idea of the video, was working quite well. I think they represent the lyrics very well, and so far it has turned out to be the right choise to go on with that idea. We'll see what the public thinks of it!

Many paper coffee-cups were destroyed, tons of tortillas eaten, one little dog being traumatized for life, hours of films rolled, and the results will speak for themselves. I hope. At least we had amazing time those months and days, and I thank everyone for their strength, patience and contributions to make this video live!

Welcome to my new Blog! I am happy to finally gather my works under one website. Here you can view my art in videos and slideshows, and follow my ups and downs that my journey in the world of costumes has, and will be, facing. The joy of creating and the hard work, shall hopefully one day reach all the goals I promised to myself to do, when I was 17 and having the passion for costumes grow in me. Now i'm close to the age of 25, and I have worked, studied, cried, studied, worked and yet again cried to reach the point where I am now. On the verge of moving my whole life to Italy this autumn, I decided to start a blog to share with you the journey coming. Hopefully my work shall give the audiences much pleasure and joy in the years to come!
